There’s a trend I’m seeing with a lot posts on reddit and other various dieting forums that I want to try and address.
The poster is asking, in some form or another:
“Am I doing it right?”
“I’m doing a, b, c, but not seeing result x, not sure if I’m doing it right…so, Am I?”
These are fair questions, and that’s what the community is for, but it seems there is a commonality between these posts. The poster is not adequately tracking their diet.
Most of the time it’s because they weren’t shown how. But sometimes it’s due to laziness or that they think tracking “just isn’t for them”. They just aren’t a “numbers” person, you know?
Other times, it’s because the person read somewhere that intermittent fasting will solve their problems, and they’re surprised that skipping breakfast last week didn’t get them a six-pack.
Why is this important?
More often than not, if they had been tracking, they would know what is going on and could make adjustments themselves, without needing to ask in the first place.
Are you one of these folks? Well here is my plea, if you are serious about getting the body you want, if you really do want it, you’ve got to put in the effort and track your diet.
You won’t have to track forever but it is essential in the beginning.
Go back to square one, and start things on the right foot.
I’ll go into more detail in future posts but you should be able to find most of this thru google searches.
Some basic tracking:
- Calculate your daily energy expenditure.
- Set a daily calorie target that includes a deficit that will result in a reasonable and sustainable weight loss rate per week.
- Take a starting photograph and weigh yourself every morning after you pee.
- Begin to track your food intake using the MyFitnessPal app.
From here you’ll be way ahead of most dieters. After a week, you’ll be able to tell if your calculation was right, and if not, add or remove calories until it is.
Now, when you ask questions on a forum you’ll be able to show what you’ve been doing and someone can give you a thorough answer that is unique to you.
Hopefully that provided some value to ya’ll. Let me know what you think! Tweet me or join my list. Also, if you liked it, it would be very much appreciated if you could copy the URL and share it :).
